ENGLISH SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS
Note: (1)Assessments for Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors will be determined by class instructors at the beginning of the school year. (2)Freshmen and Sophomores will submit book reports on their books when they return to school in August. For the book report form, click here. (3)For the American Library Association's list of Best Books for Young Adults, click here.
All incoming freshmen will read Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and any one title from the ALA Best Books for Young Adults list.
All sophomores-to-be will read John Knowles's A Separate Peace and any one title from the ALA Best Books for Young Adults list. Sophomores in the Pre-A.P. class will also read Edith Hamilton's Mythology (Parts II & III), Greg Mortensen's Three Cups of Tea, and Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones.
All juniors-to-be will read F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. All juniors other than those registered for A.P. Language and Literature can select from either Zore Neale Hurstson's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Alice Walker's The Color Purple, or Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. Juniors enrolled in A.P. Language and Composition will read Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man. Any questions that A.P. All seniors-to-be not enrolled in A.P. English Literature and Composition will read William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Seniors enrolled in A.P. Literature and Composition are to read Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, Michael Cunningham's The Hours, and Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. State Scholars Announced - The Following Gordon Tech seniors have been named Illinois State Scholars for 2009: Matthew Aho (St. Andrew), Ashley Andrade (St. Viator), Sergio Armendariz (St. Margaret Mary), Andrew Baniecki (Queen of Angels), Jelena Voynovich (LaSalle Language Academy), and Martin Yousif (Peterson Elementary). Selection is based on ACT and/or SAT scores and class rank at the end of the junior year. Congratulations on this very prestigious honor!
Deans' Breakfast Honorees - These students have earned the right to have breakfast with the Deans on Friday, May 22, at 8:15 am. The students did not miss a day of school, never came late to school, and never received a demerit the entire school year. For their accomplishment, they will have the breakfast and then be dismissed from school for the rest of the day. Eight GT Seniors Receive Vicariate II Awards -- The 10th Annual Vicariate II Leadership Awards Banquet was hosted by Bishop Francis Kane on Sunday, March 8, At the White Eagle Banquet Center in Niles, IL. Over 500 parents and awardees attended this event, whose purpose was to recognize and affirm outstanding youth leaders of this vicariate's parishes and high schools.
Eight Gordon Tech seniors received awards from Bishop Kane. Sergio Armendariz, Andrew Baniecki, Alexandra Calzada, Matthew Castillo, Kiana Reed, and Jelena Voynovich received Peer Ministry Awards. Timothy Maples received the Prayer and Worship Award, and David Scott the Community Service and Social Justice Award. Also present was Gordon Tech President & Principal Fr. Paul Sims, C.R., Ph. D, and Campus Minister Fr. Joseph Malczyk, C.R.

Academic Achievement Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen - Gordon Tech will be awarding scholarships for top academically achieving students who will be Incoming Freshmen. These scholarships will be known as the Fr. Blaski Scholarships, in honor of the late Fr. Henry Blaski, C.R., who was Principal of Gordon Tech from 1982-1991.
They will be distributed thusly: Highest Scoring Student on the GT Entrance Exam: $2,000 Second Highest Scoring Student: $1,000 Third Highest Scoring Student: $500
Also, the students with the highest scores and top grades from each of the following schools will receive $1,000 Fr. Blaski Scholarships. St. Andrew St. Hyacinth St. Ladislaus St. Stanislaus Kostka St. Sylvester St. Viator Queen of Angles
The Fr. Blaski Scholarships are awarded for the students' freshman year only.
Baseball Team Highlights - The Varsity Baseball Team finished third in the Catholic League White with 10 wins and 4 losses. Senior First Baseman Bill Miller became a three time First Team All-Catholic League player with a .429 batting average and had 5 wins and 3 losses on the mound with 60 strikeouts. Junior Center Fielder Danny Britt made First Team All-Catholic League Honors with a .446 batting average. Senior Short Stop Edwin Davila made First Team All-Catholic League honors with a .412 batting average. Junior Pitcher Jeremy Ryan made First Team All-Catholic League honors with 6 wins. Freshman Second Baseman Jeremias Delgado made Honorable Mention All-Catholic League with a .329 batting average and 12 stolen bases. Miller made the Catholic League Senior All-Star team, which played in the All-Star Game at U.S. Cellular Field. Britt and Junior Catcher Dan Kriho made the Chicago Catholic League Junior All-Star team. Miller won the 2009 team MVP, Britt won the Silver Slugger Award, and Kriho won the "Red Miller" coaches award.
In the first round of the I.H.S.A. playoffs, the Rams beat Pritzker Academy 4-3 in the Gordon Tech Regional, led by Ryan's complete game pitching on Friday, May 29. The next day, the Rams battled hard, but their late inning ralley fell short as they lost to Riverside-Brookfield 6-4 in the Regional Championship. Britt gave the Rams six solid innings; Davila had two hits and 2 RBI. The Rams rallied with Kriho's two run single in the seventh inning, but it was not quite enough. Congratulations to the Rams on a very good season.
Graduating Seniors Sign Letters of Intent - Two seniors signed letters of intent to play college baseball next year. Senior 1B Bill Miller signed with Trinity Christian and senior SS Edwin Davilla signed with Benedictine University.
GT Softball Girls Having Best Season Ever! - Due to the weather we have not played as many games as we would have liked, but in the games we have played, our team has been nothing short of dominant. With a 7-0 record in conference and an 8-1 record overall, we won our conference (GCAC White) easily. Six of our conference wins were by 10 runs or more (two wins were by 20) and we trailed in only one half of one inning out of a possible 34 innings of conference games all season. Our non-conference win was over was over a strong Chicago Public League Lincoln Park squad. We have a very young team, but our standout player has been junior pitcher Kristin Nitka. She is 5-0 on the season with an ERA under 2.0, including tossing a no-hitter against Notre Dame. She has struck out an impressive 48 hitters in 27 innings of work. The Rams had four players named to the GCAC White Division all-conference team. They are Junior pitcher Kristin Nitka (St. Thecla), Sophomore infielder Stacey Heliotis (Our Lady of Victory), Junior infielder/pitcher Natalie Martinez (St. Andrew), and Freshman outfielder/pitcher Murielle Vansach (McCracken).
Graduating Seniors to play college football - Congratulations to the following seniors who will be continuing their football careers at the collegiate level. Ben Gonzalez (Peterson Elementary), Noel Duckworth (St. Mary of the Lake), Lionel Lucas (St. Angela), and Edwin Davila (Agassi School) will be attending Benedictine University in the fall and playing football. Edwin will also play baseball at Benedictine. Dwayne Howard (Hearst Elementary) will be attending Illinois Wesleyan and playing football fot the Titans. Karl Sullivan (Uptown Christian School) will be attending DePauw University, in Indiana, and playing for the Tigers. Again, congratulations to our seniors who will be playing collegiate football at the next level. All of your hard work has paid off.
Basketball Player commits to St. Norbert College - Gordon Tech Senior Ray Lichter (Queen of All Saints) has made a verbal commitment to continue his basketball career at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. Ray had an outstanding senior season leading the Rams to a Regional Championship. He was named 1st team All-Catholic League, recipient of the Tom Kleinschmidt Team MVP award, All-Tournament Team at the Luther North Holiday Classic, and Special Mention All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Congratulations, Ray!
Basketball Legend Receives Honor - Gordon Tech legend Tom Kleinschmidt '91 was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall-of-Fame at their annual banquet at Illinois State University. Tom led the Rams downstate to the state championship game and went on to a great career at DePaul University, as well as a lengthy professional basketball career overseas. We are proud of you, Tom!
Coach Boyle Named District #1 Coach of the Year
The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association has selected Mr. Shay Boyle as District #1, Boys Basketball, Class 3A/4A, Co-Coach of the Year. The award will be presented at the IBCA banquet on April 25 2009, at Illinois State University in Normal, IL. The 2008-2009 season was Coach Boyle's first year as Gordon Tech's varsity boys basketball head coach. Congratulations also to the Boys Varsity Basketball team on their great season and on their Regional Championship
GT Drama Students Wow Audiences -
The Diary of Anne Frank, the GT Theatre Department's Fall Production was a resounding success. Everyone knows this poignant story of a young girl who believed even in the midst of the Holocaust that "despite everything, people are still good at heart." The cast and crew were reviewed by members of the Illinois Theatre Festival Association. The production was viewed by over 800 people, with standing ovations at each performance.  Stephen Sondheim's Tony-Award-Winning Musical Into the Woods was the Spring selection for the GT Theatre Department. Gordon Tech students shined as everyone's favorite fairy tale characters from the Brothers Grimm. The set was inventive, the music catchy, and the costumes were gorgeous! Students, staff, parents, and friends flocked in record numbers to the Portage Theatre the last weekend in March to see fairy tales come true.
Boys Track Team Sets GT Record in IHSA Sectional - The Boys Track and Field Team scored 93 points at the IHSA Sectional Meet on Friday, May 22. These are the most points a Gordon Tech team ever scored at this meet. The GT winners were: 100 meters Noel Duckworth 1st place, Andriy Birkus 4th place; 200 meters Matt Castillo 1st place; 400 meters Milkie Mussa 1st place; 800 meters Tim Carroll 4th place; 110 meter high hurdles Danzel Jones 4th place; 300 meter hurdles Danzel Jones 6th place; 4 x 100 meter relay Noel Duckworth, Matt Castillo, Fuhad Akinbiyi, Felix Oppong 1st place; 4 x 200 meter relay Noel Duckworth, Matt Castillo, Fuhad Akinbiyi, Felix Oppong 2nd place; 4 x 400 meter relay Joshua Willis, Tim Carroll, Tim Jacks, Fuhad Akinbiyi 5th place; 4 x 800 meter relay Tim Carroll, Justin Cagades, Edwin Almeida, Daniel Franco 3rd place; Shotput Karl Sullivan 1st place, Lionel Lucas 4th place; Discus Tramel Westbrook 2nd place.
